MINING & GROUND STABILISATION

Virtually every county and region of the United Kingdom has, at some period in the past, been subject to underground mining for a variety of minerals. The impact of such workings, some from the neolithic period, has been largely unrecorded until recent times. Today the hazards created by such workings, particularly in coal and limestone, are widely recognised. Hazards from underground cavitation vary with the nature of the mineral and the mode by which it was extracted, but typically can include settlement of the surface and structural failure in buildings.

OUR MINING AND GROUND STABILISATION SERVICES INCLUDE:

  • Research - use of JPB’s unique mining and ground condition archive (including several thousand original mine plans).
  • Mining Reports - Initial low-cost, archive-based, mining risk assessment with recommendations for ground investigation and stabilisation, if appropriate.
  • Investigation of Old Mine Workings - Design and supervision of drilling and geophysical investigations to prove the condition of old workings or mined ground.
  • Mine Workings Stabilisation - Design and supervision of the grouting or bulk infilling of old mine workings in coal, limestone, sandstone, and other bedded and vein minerals.
  • Mineshaft Stabilisation - Design and supervision of shaft searches and treatment; liaison with the Coal Authority where appropriate; preparation of completion reports to satisfy local authorities and NHBC.
  • Subsidence Engineering - Subsidence modelling and prediction; surface subsidence monitoring; property condition surveys; recommended structural precautions.
  • Opencast Mining and Bulk Earthworks - Earthworks design and optimisation of muckshift; specification and control of opencast backfilling and bulk earthmoving.
