INTEGRATED POLLUTION PREVENTION AND CONTROL (IPPC)

The aim of IPPC is to achieve a high level of environmental protection in an efficient way through the permitting of numerous industrial sites.

The Pollution Prevention and Control Regulations came into force in 2000 and require a holistic approach to the regulation of selected industrial activities.

All emissions to air, land or water, in addition to any environmental aspects, must be considered together. Based on this information the Environment Agency/SEPA can then set permit conditions which will allow industry to achieve a high standard of environmental protection.

Conditions set by the EA/SEPA take account of 'best available techniques'. This involves assessing the most effective equipment available to ensure that emissions are kept to a minimum whilst taking into consideration the cost and advantages to the operator compared with the benefit to the environment.
